Today’s article is an excerpt from two pages of “The Encyclopedia of Country Living,” 10th edition. Carla Emery was an organic farmer who taught homesteading skills; her book was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest mimeographed volume in general circulation at 700 pages in 1975. The following excerpt is republished here under the intention of the Fair Use doctrine – no copyright infringement intended.
October 1992. For the last 5 weeks, I’ve been going to barter fairs every weekend selling books, off in the most rural areas of eastern Washington and northern Idaho. At one fair in the Okanogan Highlands, where the stars at night look so big and bright you feel that you could just reach up and grab one, I happened on a quinoa (pronounced “keenwa”) booth. “Oh,” I said to the lady with delight. “Could I buy some seed from you?”
“No,” she stated firmly. “You can buy quinoa porridge, or flour, or quinoa grain for soups, but we don’t sell seed. We’ve spent 5 years developing our supply source direct from the high Andes and have too much invested to risk that.”
Well, phooey all over you, I thought to unspoken return, as I silently walked away. Sorry about that, Lady, but I’ll lay odds you’re growing it yourself right in this lovely mountain valley. It’s a perfect place for quinoa. And you may not like it, but in the new edition of my book I’m going to tell anybody who reads it how to grow quinoa. Yes, and where they can get seed right here in the United States. Some types of information I think should be public by God-given right, including where to get seeds and how to grow and process food. So here it is… Continue reading
Today’s article is an essay by Nick Roberts, which was originally published by the Libertarian Alliance back in 1989. As a Briton, what Roberts is arguing in favor of is quite simply the employment of libertarian assassins (“jackals”) to kill tyrants, especially as punishment for democide. Please be sure to also read The State is Not Great, Nuclear Anarchism, and especially Assassination Markets for more explication on use of force issues.
How can free men and women defend themselves cheaply and effectively against the depredations of tyrants? How can this result be achieved morally? These questions are very important, I believe, to the cause of liberty. This is because they are among the “toughies” – those problems which seem insoluble when arguing for anarcho-capitalism. The following are all my transcriptions of the late LaVoy Finicum’s videos between 2014 – 2016. The last few transcripts include other individuals, like his widow Jeanette, who provided certain details that nicely rounded out his legacy. You all are welcome to mirror these transcripts provided that you give attribution to me as the transcriber of Finicum’s words and to the respective speakers themselves (dates follow a yy/mm/dd format).
The Transcript Bibliography of LaVoy Finicum
The following is my transcription of Jeanette Finicum’s speech entitled, “Jeanette Finicum responds to Oregon State and Federal FBI investigative report,” which was uploaded onto the late LaVoy Finicum’s YouTube channel on March 8th of 2016. Jeanette’s husband, LaVoy, was gunned down in the snow by the Bluecoats earlier on January 26th. This is also the last video on LaVoy’s channel that I will transcribe; a bibliography of my entire transcribed series ought to be available shortly.
The news conference held earlier today in Bend, Oregon to release the report of the investigation regarding my husband’s death was to be expected. No surprises. The purpose of that announcement was for the state and federal agencies to continue to lay the foundation for their legal case; however, they have brought forward selective evidence – as in all such situations, there is another side to the story. We will provide a more thorough analysis of a follow-up news conference tomorrow and will be taking questions at that time. Continue reading
The following is my transcription of Jeanette Finicum’s speech at the Stand By Me For Liberty rally on the steps of the Salt Lake City capitol building on March 5th of 2016 – it was recorded by the PartisanRock YouTube channel. As LaVoy’s widow, Jeanette provides insight and some degree of closure regarding who her husband really was. For background as to how and why LaVoy was killed, please read the Burns Chronicles.
First, I would like to say thank you to Jordan Page for that beautiful song. When we heard it on the Internet, we…ok, ok, I’m real close, I’m about to eat it [*chuckles*] – oh, this is so foreign to us. When we heard Jordan singing that song, we wondered how he could know LaVoy so personally. He was able to describe my husband so well; he was a man who lived by a code. He was a man of God, and he followed those principles and values in every part of his life. Continue reading
The following is my transcription of former political prisoner David Lee Fry in his video entitled, “Camp Finicum!,” which was uploaded onto his YouTube Channel on February 7, 2016. As one of the Final Four left at the Malheur Refuge, Fry shows both the importance of LaVoy Finicum to the other protesters as well as some evidence he discovered. For more background on what happened in Oregon last year, please read the Burns Chronicles.
Alright, so this is what we named our little encampment here, it’s called “Camp Finicum,” in memory of LaVoy Finicum. Interesting thing about this is that one day after we put this up here, we found this [book] down by the place down there. Jeff [Banta]’s been wanting a Bible and he just picked one up, and it happens to be LaVoy Finicum’s Bible!
Here’s something…it’s pretty interesting, you know, just as we put this camp name up, we find this [Bible], so it’s quite a miracle to us. I think the family should be able to come and get this Bible and keep it. I think it should belong with them. So, we [the Final Four] are just gonna hold onto it for now, I guess, until whenever people can get their things, but this is quite the find…“Children of God” – LaVoy was definitely one of those.
That’s just something we wanted to share with you all. Until next video. Later.
The following is my transcription of the late LaVoy Finicum’s last moments on January 26th of 2016. As mentioned in earlier installments of the Burns Chronicles, it is reasonable to conclude that had it not been for Finicum’s actions, it would’ve likely been the case that Ryan Bundy, Victoria Sharpe, and Shawna Cox would’ve all been killed just like him. What you are about to read is based upon Cox’s footage that was shot from inside Finicum’s truck that fateful day; any errors in transcription are solely the fault of this humble blogger.
LaVoy Finicum: Shoot me, you shoot me! I’m gonna meet the sheriff, the sheriff is waitin’ for us! So, you do as you damn well please, but I’m not goin’ anywhere! Here I am, right there! Right there, put a bullet through it! You understood? I’m gonna go meet the sheriff. You back down, or you kill me now! Go ahead, put the bullet through me! I don’t care! Continue reading
The following is my transcription of the late LaVoy Finicum in his videos entitled,“Liberty Revolution – Reaching Out To Paiute’s,” which was uploaded onto his YouTube channel on January 26th of 2016. Finicum was a participant in both the 2014 Bundy Affair as well as the Burns Chronicles, during which he met his untimely demise the very same day this video was uploaded. Only a few more transcripts to go, and then a bibliography will be made available so this entire series is easily sourced.
Good morning, America; this is LaVoy Finicum. Here at the Harney County Resource Center here in Oregon. I need to give you a quick update, keep you in the loop of what’s going on.
As you know, we’ve been reaching out to the Paiute tribe in regards to the artifacts, and we shall continue to do so. At this point, they have made it very clear that they do not want to have any interaction with us. I did have a member from the Delaware tribe come out and try to be an emissary between us and them; had other tribal leaders from other places also offer that, and so, at this point, we will go ahead and just keep an open invitation to them.
We will also make sure that the artifacts are not disturbed, not moved, left as we have found them and safe and secure. Again, that is a quick update on that. We shall see how it goes from here.
The following is my transcription of the late LaVoy Finicum in his videos entitled,“Jan 22,” which was uploaded onto his YouTube channel on January 24th of 2016. Finicum was a participant in both the 2014 Bundy Affair as well as the Burns Chronicles, during which he met his untimely demise on January 26th of 2016. If you would like to assist me in providing rough transcripts for the rest of Finicum’s vlogs, please feel free to contact me.
Hello, America; this is LaVoy Finicum. It’s January 22nd, I’m here at the Harney County Resource Center, and this is at the Oregon freedom revolution. I need to give you a quick update.
The FBI has reached out to us, and to Ammon, and there’s been a lot of concern. A lot of media has trying to contact me; they’re sayin’, “Are we gettin’ ready to capitulate? Are we gettin’ ready to negotiate? Are we gettin’ ready to leave?,” and I need to help rest assure all your concerns that we are not going anywhere. Continue reading
The following is my partial transcription of the late LaVoy Finicum in his videos entitled,“Jan 20 NATIVE AMERICAN ARTIFACTS,” which was uploaded onto his YouTube channel on January 21st of 2016. Finicum was a participant in both the 2014 Bundy Affair as well as the Burns Chronicles, during which he met his untimely demise on January 26th of 2016. If you would like to assist me in providing rough transcripts for the rest of Finicum’s vlogs, please feel free to contact me.
What it is, Blaine [Cooper], is that we are concerned about the way artifacts have been stored here (the Paitue’s artifacts), and so, we are reaching out to the Paiute tribe to say that we need to open up some communication. We’re looking for a liaison, because we want to make sure that these things are returned to the rightful owners and that they’re taken care of.
These are some of their artifacts (why don’t you step back?). I want to show you how we found these things stored here, so you can see there’s boxes of artifacts here. You can see some rat’s nests in here; this is the way we found it. You can see the grinding stones, and different things here. Continue reading
